It helps networks exchange routing information. One provider can operate several autonomous systems, and one system can announce many address blocks. The number is not an account, a device serial number or a separate identifier for each broadband subscription.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>Organization and ISP are different labels\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>The access provider supplies the internet connection. An IP-associated organization is an entity linked to the address in a dataset; an AS organization is associated with the relevant autonomous system number. These may coincide, but the label depends on the field definition. A company name in a lookup is not necessarily the brand on a broadband bill, nor evidence that the user works for that company.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>Registration, routing and location answer different questions\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Resource registration records describe allocation or management relationships and can be queried through services such as Whois and RDAP. BGP observations help associate an address block with the autonomous systems announcing it; announcement and registration are not the same relationship. Location databases separately maintain geographic information. A lookup may combine these sources rather than decode a company and city from the digits of the IP. Their updates need not occur together.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>Why might the name differ from my provider’s brand?\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Consider a fictional customer buying service from local Brand A while upstream Network B supplies or announces the relevant address block. Seeing B does not establish that the customer bought the wrong service. Leasing, reassignment and company renaming can also affect labels. Before drawing conclusions, distinguish a trading brand, legal entity and historical name, and check which relationship and date the record describes.\u003C\u002Fp>\n\u003Ch2>Reading a result without filling in the gaps\u003C\u002Fh2>\n\u003Cp>Imagine a result listing Organization A, an ASN, Country B and City C. Organization and ASN describe network associations; a registered country may describe resource registration, while a city may be a geolocation estimate. These fields do not form a personal identity record. Missing information should remain unknown rather than be guessed from a hostname or company name.
